Golden Retriever Shedding and Care

Most people who purchase their first Golden Retriever are usually amazed at how much hair a Golden Retriever sheds right through the year. Golden Retrievers are known to be one of the most beautiful dogs on the planet and one of the things that contribute to their beautiful looks are their hair.

Goldens are double coated hair breed dogs which means that during winter months they develop a thick undercoat which protects them from all the harsh winter elements and during summer times or warmer weather times their bodies will shed the thick undercoat to adjust to the warmer weather conditions.

At first though one would think that having a dog which sheds so much hair right through the year would be a huge burden and big pain in the backside but believe me it isn’t. It’s just a question of setting up a few small routines or creating a few good habits and your problems are solved.

The other thing I found, and many of the other Golden Retriever owners that I spoke to also agree with this, is that these dogs beautiful temperament and nature gives you so much pleasure that it makes up for everything that could ever irritate you. Once they get into your heart the last thing that you ever think of is the amount of hair they shed. You just tend to except “it comes with the territory” as they say 🙂

So how do one control or prevent your Golden from shedding bunches of hair on a daily basis? Here are some important facts to consider or keep in mind when it comes to your Golden Retriever shedding hair:

  • Goldens shed their hair 24/7/365 a year. They can’t control where they shed their hair so expect it everywhere and except it.
  • The easiest way by far to control your golden retriever shedding is to brush him/her on a daily basis. Yes, it’s really that easy. Make it a point to give your Golden a daily treat by brushing him/her and also play and scratch them a bit. They love being taken care of and they are mad about the attention you give them. They will let you scratch and brush them all day long if you feel up to it 🙂
  • If you don’t have the time or just don’t feel like brushing your golden every day then do it at least 2-3 times per week.
  • Don’t use sprays to prevent your Golden from shedding. Some people also use pills and in most cases these types of sprays and pills are bad for your Goldens health.
  • Feed your Golden good quality food. A nutrient-rich diet will keep your golden healthy as well as his/her hair. A healthy coat is a lot less likely to loose hair than one that isn’t.

  • Supplement your Goldens food with omega-3 oils. You can also give your Golden eggs and some raw meat occasionally to ensure s/he is getting enough moisture in his/her diet.
  • Another way to help keep your Goldens double coat healthy is to bath him/her regularly and wash the coat with a good quality shampoo.
  • Vacuum your home daily to keep your home hair free. An easy way to protect your couches is to cover them with couch covers that are washable
  • Beware of medical conditions such as thyroid disease or other skin allergies that can also cause excessive hair shedding.
  • NEVER EVER cut your Goldens hair off. Most people’s prime motivation for shaving their Goldens hair off is to “keep him/her cool“. You might think you are actually doing a really good deed with this, but you are in fact creating a far worse situation. You are not just destroying your Goldens coat integrity, but you are leaving your Golden open to a multitude of complications like heat stroke, skin cancer, alopecia, Solar-induced Squamous Cell Carcinomas and Dermal Hemangiosarcomas. This excellent article “To Shave or Not To Shave” by Nancy Bynes who are a certified master groomer with more than 38 years experience is a real eye opener.
